In the game Super Smash Bros Ultimate, your brawling fighter must leave the heat of battle to break open a Smash Ball if they want to use their super move. It’s a gamble, but the pay-off could rocket you to first place. Everyone wants the Smash Ball, and it’s the most powerful weapon in the game. However, the risk has caused many players to lose. Many have been tempted to chase the Smash Ball, but they end up losing the match because they took their eyes off the prize.
Jesus warns his followers that veering off the course to entertain temptation is a disaster. What seems like a fun detour that could add some relief to your day is actually a trap that ruins relationships, personal health, and connection. The worst part is when your addictive behavior causes someone innocent to get hurt. Many new believers and kids have rejected following Jesus because their mentors showed a weakness to sin that put Jesus in the wrong light. Jesus literally says it’s better that you disappear from that person’s life than show them a sin that corrupts them. That is heavy.
As Christians, we are always called to repentance and defense against sin. Whether it is something serious, like anger management, or something simple, like skipping dessert. It’s so important to evaluate ourselves in the teachings of Scripture and ask God to help us overcome temptation.
