THE TAKEAWAY:

The Father covers every cost to be with you

THE MESSAGE:

Spider-Man: No Way Home puts Peter Parker in a tragic situation. When the multiverse opens, releasing notorious villains, Peter learns that each of them will die for their crimes back in their world. Instead of sending them back to their death sentence, he chooses to reform them, using science to heal them of their illnesses and problems. Despite his altruistic efforts, the Green Goblin escapes and kills Peter’s beloved Aunt May. Peter gets a chance to avenge her in the final fight scene, threatening to crush her murderer as justice, but instead he administers the treatment and sends Green Goblin back to his multiverse. Peter still chose mercy even when it cost him.

One Bible story that completely amazes me is Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. It’s not amazing because he chooses to do such a dirty task, but because of one person he served. Judas was guaranteed to betray him to religious authorities and send him to his death, but Jesus still served him outlandishly. He knew that Judas would stray from the group and stab him in the back, but he served his enemy.

Take one step back, and we see this on a cosmic scale. God, the Father, knows his creation will disappoint him, spit on him, and disrespect him. Instead of removing the offenders, he sends his son to heal us. Jesus died on a Roman cross before the religious authorities, but his sacrifice created a path to heal our relationship with him. This is a payment that forgives all charges, crimes, and offenses in exchange for having his children by his side. No one should expect this generous, selfless gift from God, but God shows that this is what loving fathers do for their kids.

REFLECT OVER IT:

Read: John 13:1-5, Romans 5:7-9

  1. Why would showing generosity and kindness to our enemies be better than hurting them? What did Jesus believe?
  2. According to Romans 5:7-9, how do you think God will treat you, knowing that you will offend and disappoint him?
  3. Which sins in your life make you feel disqualified from being a child of God?
  4. How can you use the promise in Romans 5:7-9 to feel qualified again?
