Matt Roller, a writer from Rick and Morty, built a haunted hotel that was formerly a prison, which was formerly an insane asylum, which was formerly a prison. This amounts to a house full of ghosts, psychopaths, unspeakable horrors, and cults. Kathryn Freeling inherited the hotel from her spectral brother, Nathan, who has stuck around to help. Tagging along are the kids, Ben the awkward teen, and Esther the young horror expert who wants to fit in. Oh, and we can’t forget Abaddon. He is a demon boss stuck in the body of a boy from the 1700s.

Despite the thousands of horrid setbacks, the Freeling family tries to run a business in a hotel that has no business…being a business. Stabby, the deceased murderer, wants to stab everyone; an Eldritch Horror hates when Kathryn runs the vacuum, Abaddon wants to collect everyone’s bones for a ritual, and Ben is dating a 1920’s flapper who wants stardom. It seems like Esther is the only one prepared to defend the family from vampires, ghosts, and demons.

Haunted Hotel is delightfully funny in a Parks and Rec sort of way. The family tries to survive in this horrible, macabre world, while Nathan optimistically tries his darndest to add some sunshine and silverlinings to their situation. It’s as if Bob’s Burgers made a pact with The Haunting of Hill House.

Episodes are funny, with clever uses of all the characters. Abaddon and Nathan steal the show, with Nathan’s penchant for seeing the bright side and Abaddon’s struggle to balance being a demon lord with his needs as a small ADHD boy.

I don’t think this will win over the Rick and Morty crowd, who love the randomness and absurdity, because Haunted Hotel has a pretty contained universe. The dedication to the occult, demons, vampires, and monsters means it will give you a Hellraiser vibe, and I don’t recommend this for people who are squeamish or sensitive about the spiritual world.

The episodes are addictive like popcorn, and I think this is Netflix’s funniest comedy offering, without delving into filthy language and sex jokes. It’s definitely memeworthy with all of Abaddon and Nathan’s lines.
