It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 2 Timothy 2:6

Leadership Tips III

Stardew Valley puts you as the farmer in charge of a vacant lot. The game requires that you dig, sow, build, mend, barter, serve, collect, protect, cultivate, and irrigate your land until you have a whole farm. The Stardew community takes great pride in sharing their farms. I have no idea why anyone would think this game is relaxing.

Paul’s leadership analogy likens ministry to the work of a farmer. If the farmer works hard, he is entitled to a share of the crops. It is his reward for maintaining the labor.

There’s an interesting paradox in scripture: the tension between relying on God and working for results. Scripture teaches that God is the only force that enables change; however, we must work to achieve the results.

The work of a saint is complex, involving planning, casting vision, setup, awkward conversations, and management. When we finally see the church grow or a new person accept the Gospel, we become empowered to do it all again.

In your journey, I pray that you consider the work of a faithful servant, laboring hard to see God’s world flourish.

Figure it Out:

7Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. 8You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
James 5:7

  1. Circle any words or phrases that are significant to you. What makes them so important?
  2. What is the farmer’s role? What is God’s role?
  3. What joys can we attain from working hard at God’s mission?
