Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

Love is God’s Will Pt. 2

When Spider-Man fights Doc Ock on the subway roof, he does not anticipate having to keep the car from crashing by holding the entire car in his arms. Hundreds of NYC passengers are in his debt because he literally took the burden of the train. His bravery and sacrifice is what makes Spider-Man such a worthy hero.

When Paul encouraged the church of Galatia to  share each other’s burdens it is easy to think Paul wants us to look for errands to run for people. But if you read the passage before, Paul is actually urging the church to be mentors to Christians caught up in sin.

Sin is a burden and scripture teaches us that it can’t be vanquished with sheer willpower and good intentions. Many times we need to have mentors and prayer support.

As mature Christians, we need to offer mentoring to younger people in our church. There is a lot of secret pain and confusion that needs the experience of a seasoned believer. Whether it is a friend getting over an addiction or someone needs wisdom to get to the next step of their faith, they need someone to help lift that burden.

The best place to start is praying and asking your church about any mentoring programs they run. Then it is recommended that you receive proper training on how to give mentoring with gentleness, humility, and safety so you don’t get caught up in someone’s burden.

God’s love is strongest when mature Christians are watching out for other members of the family.

Figure It Out

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believera is overcome by some sin, you who are godlyb should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important Galatians 6:1-3

  1. Circle any words or phrases that are significant to you. What makes them important?
  2. What are the characteristics of a good mentor according to verse 1?
  3. Why does Paul consider this task “obeying the whole law?”
  4. How will you start your journey to mentor someone?
