In the world of Smashing and Brothers, there are very few titles that are worth your money when it comes to party brawlers. Very few would assume that the Shrek franchise could make a decent fighting game to rival Nintendo’s iconic Super Smash Bros.
Shrek Super Slam doesn’t attempt to match the depth, balance, or competitiveness of Super Smash Bros, but it does something awe-inspiring. It makes a fun and charming brawler that can win over the young lads and fun dads. And it’s on all major 2000s consoles.
Shrek Super Slam is a 3D arena brawler with battle rules similar to PlayStation All-Stars. Characters beat each other with fast and strong attacks until they fill their SLAM meter. Then they hit a super move that can potentially take out several opponents. Each slam interacts with the level, making the stage break or reveal hidden secrets.
While the strategy is simple, the skilled player is the one who knows how to get to the SLAM move first, while avoiding their empowered opponents. Various weapons around the arena can stun, incapacitate, or knock away your opponent, giving an advantage.
Word to the Wise: While this game has a whole cast of Shrek characters, Puss and Boots is the overpowered one. His SLAM stuns multiple opponents and rams them off the stage. Donkey charges like a bullet, Shrek sends out a fart cloud, Gingy shoots out peppermints, and Pinocchio flies around like a hummingbird.

The DS version of the game doesn’t suck, despite many reviewers giving it average marks. The 3D navigation is smooth, and the attacks connect. The game lets you spam attacks, which puts the computer at a severe disadvantage, but it’s still pretty challenging. The bubble gun weapon is the most annoying advantage in the game, as it imprisons players in an unbreakable bubble that can be spammed into infinity.
Shrek Super Slam has a small story mode that introduces characters (the DS version is actually lengthier than the console versions). Characters and costumes can be unlocked in Challenge Mode.
Shrek Super Slam won’t replace Super Smash Bros., but it offers a weekend of mindless fun, just to unlock everything.
