THE TAKEAWAY:

We are called to demonstrate relationships of sacrifice to show true love.

MESSAGE:

In one of Marvel’s most refreshing dramas, Wonder Man explores the power of friendship in the Hollywood acting community. Simon Williams would give his left arm to be cast in the remake of Wonder Man, and it does not raise any red flags that classical actor Trevor Slattery wants to help him. Unbeknownst to Simon, Trevor is also monitoring him to see whether he has a dangerous superpower that could threaten the public. Trevor must do this undercover job or go back to jail. When Trevor helps Simon nail the audition for Wonder Man, he also witnesses his destructive power. Trevor then must choose whether to help Simon with the role of a lifetime or turn him in to save himself.

Jesus spent the better part of a three-year ministry demonstrating and teaching that loving God and neighbor are the highest priorities. In one of his last talks to his disciples, Jesus declares that the greatest act of love is to sacrifice your own well-being for a friend.

As you mature, you will realize you do not have time for superficial relationships and acquaintances. Your social circle will be filled with lots of well-wishers and socializers, but you will find true value in those who give up their time, treasure, and talents to make you a better person. Jesus calls these relationships the greatest joy. Although he had many followers who loved his miracles and wisdom, he personally invested in the twelve disciples, who would give up their lives to defend him.

Who are you investing in right now? Do you have any relationships where godly people are pouring their lives into you? These are the friendships that Jesus wants to grow in your life.

FIGURE IT OUT:

9 Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.
10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love. 11 I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.
13 Greater love has no one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.
